Celebrating STEM at Lockhart Elementary

Gensler X UXD

Helping students explore STEM through Art while celebrating teamwork and giving back

2022

Leading worldwide architecture firm, Gensler, came up with an idea to create a mural for Lockhart Elementary, a local school they’ve committed to helping in Houston’s Third Ward. They tapped UXD to bring their design to life in an event that allowed their employees to join in on the art production.

Key Roles:

– Strategy Consultation

– Production Planning & Logistics

– Employee Paint Event Integration

– Mural Art Production

The Challenge

Gensler developed art for the project that won the hearts of school leaders. However, the scale and skill needed to make it all happen called for additional expertise and support on the project.

The Solution

We developed a plan that kept the mural true to the design and coordinated a strategy that allowed Gensler employees to effectively contribute to painting the mural–all in one weekend.

The Project

‘STEM for the Students’

Project Type: Interior Mural Activation

Location: Houston, Texas

Client: Gensler

Enhancements: Client Employee Mural Painting Collaboration

“Together, we worked to create this mural between Friday dismissal and the Monday morning bell–the kids reactions from the “magic mural” effect was priceless.”

– Anthony Rose, UXD

“Linh Hoang in our Gensler Houston office came up with a beautiful design to paint in lobby of Lockhart Elementary, a STEM school in HISD. Due to the intricate design and large scale of the space, our Community Impact team wasn’t sure if we could execute project without simplifying the layout. With the help and expertise of UXD, our Gensler team of volunteers were able to deliver the project as planned and give the principal, staff, and students a beautiful mural to stimulate their minds and activate the space.”

— Amber St. Julian, Genlser
